Getting better at your bowling technique

Bowling is one of those games that’s easy to start but takes a bit of practice to master. Whether you’re here for fun or trying to improve your score, learning a few simple bowling techniques can help you roll more strikes, pick up more spares, and just enjoy the game a whole lot more.

At Mt Warren Lanes, we see all kinds of bowlers – beginners, casual players, league pros, and even a few who just want to hang out and eat something from the café while pretending they’re aiming for a strike. No judgement here. But if you’re keen to step it up a bit and improve your bowling technique, keep reading.

Start with your stance

Before you even pick up the ball, your stance matters. Stand tall, keep your shoulders relaxed, and make sure you’re balanced. If you’re too stiff, you’ll lose control. If you’re too loose, you’ll lose power.

At Mt Warren Lanes, we often suggest people just try standing in a comfortable spot a few steps behind the foul line. Don’t worry about looking perfect. Focus on feeling steady and relaxed. That’s step 1 in a proper bowling technique.

The four-step approach

Most bowlers use something called the four-step approach. It’s not as fancy as it sounds. Basically, as you walk toward the lane, you take four steps and swing your arm with the ball. On the last step, you slide your front foot and release the ball.

Here’s how it goes:

  1. Hold the ball in front of you with both hands.
  2. Step with the foot on the same side as your bowling hand.
  3. As you take the next few steps, swing the ball back like a pendulum.
  4. On the last step, slide and release the ball toward the pins.

That’s it. It sounds easy, but it takes a bit of practice. Don’t worry if your bowling technique feels clunky at first. The lanes at Mt Warren Lanes are perfect for getting the hang of it.

Find your grip

Bowling balls come in different weights and have different hole sizes. Your fingers should fit comfortably – snug, but not stuck. If it feels like you’re forcing your fingers in, try another ball.

We’ve got heaps of options at Mt Warren Lanes, and if you’re still not sure, pop into Rudy’s Pro Shop. You’ll find all the gear and advice you need. Even if you want your own ball, we’ve got you covered.

Aim with your feet and eyes

Most people think they should aim straight at the pins, but there’s a better way. To improve your bowling technique, use the arrows on the lane. They’re about halfway down and help guide your throw.

Line up your feet depending on your style (straight or hook), and then aim for a specific arrow, not the pins. Trust us – this little trick helps a lot. You’ll see many league bowlers doing it, and it works.

If you’re not sure where to stand or which arrow to aim for, ask one of our friendly team members when you’re at Mt Warren Lanes. We’re always happy to help.

Learn to throw a hook

Throwing a straight ball works, but if you want to level up your bowling technique and get more strikes, learning to hook the ball is the way to go. A hook gives you better pin action and helps you hit that sweet spot between the 1 and 3 pins (for righties) or 1 and 2 (for lefties).

To throw a hook:

  • Start with your palm under the ball.
  • As you swing and release, turn your hand like you’re shaking hands with someone.
  • Don’t flick your wrist too hard—keep it smooth.

It might feel weird at first, but once you get it, it becomes second nature. Practising your hook at Mt Warren Lanes is easy – we’ve got smooth, well-maintained lanes that make the ball roll just right.

Don’t forget your follow-through

One common mistake new bowlers make is stopping their arm too early. After you release the ball, keep your arm swinging up like you’re reaching for the sky. This follow-through helps with accuracy and power.

It’s kind of like throwing a ball in cricket or baseball – your body movement continues even after the ball is gone. It helps with aim and keeps the ball from veering off to the side.

Keep it simple

The biggest tip? Don’t overcomplicate things. Bowling should be fun. Sure, technique matters if you want to improve, but try not to get too caught up in every little movement. Focus on one thing at a time and just enjoy the game.

Bring your mates, have a laugh, and grab something tasty from the café when you need a break. The more relaxed you are, the better you’ll bowl.

Join a bowling league or play more often

The best way to improve your bowling technique is to play more. Simple as that. At Mt Warren Lanes, we’ve got bowling leagues for all ages and skill levels. It’s a fun way to get better without making it feel like hard work.

League games are great because you get to play regularly, meet new people, and maybe even win a few prizes. Plus, you’ll naturally start to understand what works for you and what doesn’t.

If leagues aren’t your thing, just come in for casual games. You can book a lane online so you’re all set when you arrive.
